Welcome to North East Outfitters
Northeast Kingdom Outfitters: Retiring after 13 years of service to worldwide customers and the outdoor community. Captain David Smith and Francis Smith, the father-and-son duo that has served northeast Vermont and New Hampshire as professionals in the guide service of fly-fishing and upland bird hunting, are retiring from guiding this year. David and Francis, recipients of the coveted “Vermont Outdoor Guide of the Year Award” in 2003 and leaders in many conservation groups, namely the Northeast Kingdom Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Ruffed Grouse Society, are moving on. Captain David is semi-retiring and working part time at Wright’s Sport Shop in Newport, Vermont, when he is not chasing smallmouth bass or running his dog Annie in a secret grouse covert. Francis is back in college working toward his teaching certificate in Social Studies and Reading Teaching and will be working full time as an elementary school teacher beginning this August in Orleans County.
“There are many reasons for our retirement,” says Francis Smith, “such as recent rainy seasons and cancellations, posted property, the high cost of liability insurance and, of course, gas prices. But the main reason for me is that I want to spend more time with my son, finish my school work, and have more time to hunt and fish with my son and dad.” Any trip (fishing or hunting) that has been booked for the year 2006 will go on as planned. We are no longer taking any new bookings as of June 10, 2006. Thank you to all of our loyal and wonderful customers. Throughout the years we have made some great friendships, shared many laughs, and had an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors together. A Very Special Thank You to Rose Mary Smith: Without the help of Rose Mary Smith (aka Mom!) none of this would have been possible.
Thank you, Ro/Mom, for the countless hours you contributed to NEKO, making your world-famous apple cakes, packing hundreds of lunches, doing the bookwork, taking care of your grandson, washing loads and loads of smelly hunting and fishing clothes, putting up with many four-legged friends in your home, and for always being there when we need you. You’re the tops! Please feel free to e-mail us I will still gladly let you know what the fishing conditions are or how the grouse population is looking here in the great northeast. And please don’t forget to keep coming up to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont! It truly is the crown jewel of New England.
Thank you, Francis J. Smith and Captain David F. Smith Francis and David Smith are not only professional fishing and hunting guides, casting instructors, and top-shelf dog trainers, but they are also dedicated conservationists who have worked relentlessly for Vermont’s cold water resources as well as upland and marsh habitats. Northeast Kingdom Outfitters (NEKO) now offers guided trips and fly-fishing lessons on New Hampshire’s Upper Connecticut River. Francis Smith, veteran guide and co-owner of Northeast Kingdom Outfitters, has recently aquired his New Hampshire Fishing Guide License (NRF-#15).
NEKO offers many spectacular opportunities for the angler or hunter. In the spring fly-fishers can chase Rainbow Trout or tempt Landlocked Atlantic Salmon in two of our local rivers, the Willoughby and Clyde. In May our Turkey season opens with a flurry of gobbling and a chance for our first Cast and Blast! Summer offers plenty of opportunity to land the Lunker of a lifetime from our rivers, small ponds, and lakes. This is also the best time of year to take advantage of our Fly-Fishing Schools, perfect for a beginner or advanced student. True Double Dr. Dennis with his double.
The spectacular Autumn season is full of non-stop action. Whether pursuing salmon and brown trout, Woodcock and Ruffed Grouse, or the elusive Whitetail deer, there’s plenty of excitement in the Kingdom! Francis, David and Ted look forward to introducing you to their Kingdom! Looking for a lake, pond or stream that offers fantastic fishing opportunities? The Utah Division Of Wildlife Resources along with local Governments and Communities, have over the past several years been developing urban fishing sites. Some of these sites have been developed within a bike ride, or even walking distance from our homes. These sites offer youth and adults the opportunity to spend the day fishing without the travel and expense of heading to distant Utah waters. Theses waters are a great place to teach youth to fish, and get kids interested in the outdoors. Below is a directory of Urban Fishing Waters available through out the state. Places to go…
